Bhavish Patel speaking to Kathy Watkins - Summer 2010
Bhavish Patel, of Indian extraction and born in Kenya found his way in January 1983 to Furzedown, a place he had not really heard of until his desire to run his own local pharmacy business led him to Moyser Road. There he bought his first and only chemist shop operating under the same name as his predecessor had done even though neither of them discovered who C. Bradbury was.
Since that time “Mr Patel” has been a quiet but influential person in the lives of many Furzedown residents. The local pharmacist is a trusted figure, a source of advice on treatment, often the first port of call when pain or discomfort strikes. He talks about how he has learned to adapt his style for the different people who consult him being sensitive to their circumstances and their ages at the time.
The image in many minds is of the smiling face behind the counter in the “secret part” of the seemingly small shop but in this interview we learn that Bhavish, son, husband and father of three successful daughters actually does not live in Furzedown though he confesses that he spends at least half of his time in an area which clearly he respects, admires and regards with affection.
While the interview reveals what Bhavish Patel thinks of the area, its residents and its daily visitors, his comments are about groups. His absolute discretion about what he must know of his clients and customers is apparent when listening to this friendly but utterly professional man.
